PDF Data Extraction SDKs Compared

Apryse Smart Data Extraction pairs deterministic structure recovery with purpose-built AI models, and it runs as separate specialist engines. You pass a PDF to an engine and get back what is printed on the page. This page compares Smart Data Extraction with SDKs, cloud and AI-native APIs, IDP platforms, and open-source projects on eight axes, and says where another product fits better. Claims were verified in October 2026 against each vendor's public docs and Apryse SDK 12.2.

The Eight Things That Separate Data Extraction Tools Differ On

  1. Rebuilding tables, including merged cells and tables that break across pages

Term
What it means
Document structure
Headings, paragraphs, lists, headers, footers, and reading order, returned as JSON or Markdown.
Key-value pairs
Labels and their values, such as "Invoice No." and "4471", template-free tools find them on layouts they haven't seen, template tools need each layout defined first.
Form fields
Finds the blanks on a flat or scanned form and creates real, fillable PDF form fields.
Classification
Labels each page or document by type, such as invoice, receipt, or ID.
CAD title blocks
Reads drawing number, revision, scale, and similar fields from engineering drawings.
One-shot schema extraction
You describe the fields you want, and one call returns them, usually from an LLM.
In-process
Runs as a library inside your application, documents stay on your servers unless a feature you turn on calls an outside service.
Coordinates and confidence
The page and position of each value, and a score for how sure the model is.

Specialist Extraction Versus One-Shot Schema Extraction, and Why the Distinction Decides the Comparison

Copied to clipboard

Specialist extraction runs a separate engine for each job. Each engine returns what is printed on the page in a fixed format, with its page and usually its position. In Smart Data Extraction, you pass a PDF and the engine you want, such as tables, document structure, or key-value pairs, and get that engine's JSON back. Tables export to Excel, document structure exports to Markdown, and form field identification generates fillable PDF form fields.

The foundation is document structure recovery, which rebuilds headings, lists, tables, and reading order. It is deterministic: the same input produces the same structural representation. The key-value, form field, and classification engines use trained models and return confidence scores.

One-shot schema extraction starts from your list of fields. You send a schema or prompt, and a model, usually an LLM, returns those fields in one call. That is faster to set up for a known document type, and several products return a page, position, and confidence for each field. The trade-offs are a generative step that varies between runs and, on most services, a per-page meter.

Many products sell both: a parse call and an extract call on top of it. Smart Data Extraction has only specialist engines and no one-shot mode, so compare it with the parse layer of those products, specialty by specialty. No Smart Data Extraction step is generative, and unlike a cloud extract call, Smart Data Extraction runs in-process with no per-page meter. To get named fields, send Smart Data Extraction's JSON or Markdown to your own LLM.

Each engine has its own guide: tables, key-value pairs, form fields, and document classification. The setup and workflow guide covers the call pattern, and the DataExtractionTest sample ships in the main SDK download, so you can see an engine call and its JSON return before you decide.

On-Premises Deployment and Where Documents Are Processed

Copied to clipboard

Smart Data Extraction runs inside your application on your own servers: on-premises, in a private cloud, or air-gapped. Documents aren't sent to Apryse, and no step calls an LLM. For fully disconnected sites, confirm license activation during evaluation. There's no REST API, so if you want a service, you wrap the SDK in one.

The other SDKs here also run in-process, and some optional features call an outside service. Nutrient's schema extraction runs on a local model or calls the OpenAI or Anthropic key you supply, and its prebuilt templates need an OpenAI or Azure OpenAI account. Foxit's optional ML table recognition for PDF to Office conversion, off by default, sends rendered page images to Foxit's server.

The cloud services process documents on the vendor's servers. Azure Document Intelligence ships containers for Read, Layout, and some prebuilt models. ABBYY Vantage, Tungsten TotalAgility, and Hyperscience can also run on your own servers, and Hyperscience documents air-gapped installs. The AI-native vendors offer containers or VPC deployment, usually on enterprise plans. Self-hosted LlamaParse sends LLM calls to OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google models with your keys, directly or through Azure OpenAI, Bedrock, or Vertex.

Check each vendor's data terms. Amazon's Textract FAQ says Textract can store and use inputs to improve AWS AI services, and customers opt out through an AWS Organizations policy. Google says it never uses customer data to train Document AI.

Accuracy Claims and What They Measure

Copied to clipboard

No shared benchmark covers every solution on this page, and published numbers measure different things. Apryse doesn't publish a Smart Data Extraction accuracy benchmark, and Smart Data Extraction isn't on any public leaderboard. Before comparing two numbers, check four things:

Which product was tested: A vendor's cloud API, free CLI, and SDK can use different engines.

Which documents: Born-digital and scanned PDFs give very different results, and some datasets are academic papers only.

Who ran it: Several leaderboards are run by vendors that also compete on them.

Which version and date: Scores change between releases.

The most reliable test is your own documents. For a method, read how to evaluate an extraction SDK. For more on measuring accuracy, read extraction accuracy benchmarking.

Licensing Models

Copied to clipboard

Smart Data Extraction is an add-on package for the Apryse Server SDK, priced by quote, with no per-page meter. This page lists no competitor prices, because prices change faster than any other claim here. Confirm current prices with each vendor.

Across the other tools:

  • SDKs are quoted or sold per developer, and some meter usage: Syncfusion by documents and ABBYY FineParser by pages. Syncfusion, Aspose, ComPDF, and ABBYY FineParser publish starting prices.
  • Cloud services and AI-native APIs charge per page or credit, and prices usually stack by feature.
  • Enterprise IDP platforms sell subscriptions, often sized by page volume. Rossum publishes a starting price, and Hyperscience lists one plan on AWS Marketplace.
  • Open source is free to use under each project's license. PyMuPDF is AGPL or commercial, and some projects license model weights on separate terms.

When Another Tool Is the Better Fit

Copied to clipboard

One-shot schema extraction: If you want to name the fields and get them back from one call, Nutrient's SDK, Azure Content Understanding, Amazon Bedrock Data Automation, Google Document AI, ABBYY Vantage, Tungsten, and the AI-native APIs do that. Docling, Xberg, and LlamaIndex offer it in open source. Smart Data Extraction doesn't.

Custom classification and splitting: Nutrient, Azure, Google, Amazon Bedrock Data Automation, ABBYY Vantage, Tungsten, Hyperscience, Reducto, and Extend let you define your own labels and split a packet into documents. Smart Data Extraction has 24 fixed categories and no splitter.

OCR languages: Azure lists about 300 printed languages, ABBYY FineReader Engine 208, and Google 200+. Among other SDKs, Aspose.OCR lists 130+. Apryse OCR, through the Default OCR engine, supports 80+ languages across six script groups. If your documents need a language outside that set, one of these products covers more.

Review screens: Enterprise IDP platforms ship a screen where people check low-confidence results. With Smart Data Extraction, you build that step in your own app, and Apryse WebViewer can display the source document beside it.

When Apryse Is the Better Fit

Copied to clipboard

You need to read title blocks on engineering drawings: Smart Data Extraction reads drawing number, revision, scale, and similar fields from PDF drawings, and returns a confidence score for each. No other commercial product in this comparison documents this as of October 2026. Convert DWG, DXF, DGN, and DWF files to PDF with the separate CAD Conversion Module first. Read more about CAD title block extraction.

You need flat or scanned forms made fillable: Smart Data Extraction finds the fields and generates fillable form fields, each with a confidence score.

Your documents can't leave your servers: Smart Data Extraction runs on your server with no LLM or third-party dependency, and documents aren't sent to Apryse. It also runs air-gapped.

You need the same structure on every run: Structure recovery is deterministic: the same input produces the same structural representation. The key-value, form field, and classification engines use trained models and return confidence scores, so you can route uncertain results to a person.

You need many barcode types read offline: The separate Barcode Module reads 100+ types, including QR, DataMatrix, PDF417, Code 128, GS1-128, and USPS and Royal Mail postal codes. Barcode extraction also handles low-quality, small, and skewed codes. Vendors count types differently, so check that yours are listed.

Get a free trial key for unlimited access to the module. Trial output is limited to 100 pages and can include an evaluation watermark page.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can ask an LLM alone, and for a known document type it is the fastest setup, because one call returns the fields you name. You need a dedicated extraction SDK when the trade-offs matter: an LLM adds a generative step that varies between runs, most services meter by the page, and raw pages cost more tokens than clean structure. A dedicated SDK recovers structure first, so the model gets a smaller, cleaner payload. Smart Data Extraction does not return named fields itself, so send its JSON or Markdown to your own LLM when you need them.

A dedicated SDK fits better when you need the same structure on every run, documents that can't leave your servers, or coordinates on every element. It also fits when you need flat forms made fillable or CAD title blocks read, which no other commercial product here documents. An LLM fits better when you want named fields from one call on a known document type. Apryse publishes no Smart Data Extraction accuracy benchmark, so test both on your own documents.

A model alone gives you a generative step that varies between runs and, on most hosted services, a per-page meter. Libraries such as LangExtract and Instructor run no OCR and return no page coordinates. Pair the model with a parser that returns structure and positions, then check the values and route uncertain ones to a person. The four-step pairing in the LLM extraction libraries section shows how.

Smart Data Extraction is priced by quote as an add-on package, with no per-page meter, so your licensing cost stays predictable as volume grows. Cloud services and AI-native APIs charge per page or credit, and prices usually stack by feature. Self-hosting also puts infrastructure and maintenance on your team. Compare total cost at your own volume and confirm cloud prices with each vendor.

No. Smart Data Extraction has only specialist engines and takes no schema or prompt. It returns tables, document structure, key-value pairs, form fields, page types, barcodes, and CAD title blocks as structured data, each with its page and position. To get named fields, send Smart Data Extraction's JSON or Markdown to your own LLM. Nutrient, Azure Content Understanding, Amazon Bedrock Data Automation, Google Document AI, ABBYY Vantage, Tungsten, and the AI-native APIs offer one-shot schema extraction.
