Spreadsheet Editor Adds Threaded Comments: One Review Experience Across PDF, DOCX, and Excel
Mia Perese

Summary: Spreadsheet Editor now supports threaded comments and replies, using the same Notes Panel and API already live in WebViewer and DOCX Editor. Teams reviewing PDF, DOCX, and Excel files now get one consistent way to comment, reply, and collaborate across every format.

How Does the Support for Comments in Spreadsheet Editor Work?
With Spreadsheet Editor’s threaded comments and replies now available through both the UI and a public API, users no longer have to step outside an app to provide feedback. A reviewer flagging a formula or a specific cell can leave a note and go back to editing in the same session.
When opening a file in Spreadsheet Editor from Excel or another spreadsheet tool, existing comments or legacy notes carry over automatically, so review history remains intact.
Legacy Notes in .xls files won’t carry over, since .xls files convert to .xlsx on load.
Comments in Spreadsheet Editor: User Experience and Functionality
Comments are linked to specific cells and allow threaded replies, enabling reviewers to leave notes or respond directly. Each comment displays the message, author, date, and cell location in the Notes Panel, and clicking a comment takes you directly to that cell.
One Review Experience Across PDF, DOCX, and Excel
Spreadsheet Editor’s comments run on the same Notes Panel UI already built for WebViewer and DOCX Editor, so a workbook’s comments look and behave the way comments already do everywhere else in the SDK. With the Apryse Web SDK, a team redlining a contract in PDF, a proposal in DOCX, and a budget in Excel gets one consistent way to create and respond to comments.
How to Start Building
More from Spreadsheet Editor’s Fall Release
Spreadsheet Editor’s new comments capability ships alongside two more releases in the same Fall Web SDK cycle. WebViewer delivers faster and more reliable Content Edit performance and improves stamp management for AEC teams. DOCX Editor adds a highlight tool for flagging text without a full comment thread, along with faster search and replace on long documents.
